The Torch Lily (Kniphofia), also called the Red Hot Poker plant, is an ornamental perennial. It is esteemed for its tall, brightly-colored flower stalks that can reach up to 4 feet. It grows well in USDA zones 5-8 and can make a colorful addition to your garden.
Plant a Torch Lily From Seeds
1-Layer seeds between two damp paper towels. Place in refrigerator for 40 days. Keep paper towels moist during this time. This mimics the natural cold of the winter and helps prepare the seeds for germination.
2-Prepare a pot or seedling tray with equal parts peat moss, vermiculite and compost.
3-Sow seeds when its 40 days of chilling is complete. Plant 1/2 inch deep. Water daily to keep soil moist. Seeds will sprout within 20-90 days.
4-Transplant seedlings into a plot that receives a min. of 6 hours of sun a day. For best results, plant in loose, well-drained soil. If soil is sandy or clayey, amend with compost or peat moss as needed.
How to Care for a Torch Lily
1-Water every 2 to 3 days when the soil around the lily has dried to a depth 1/2 " below the surface.
2-Fertilize with a standard flower fertilizer every spring. It may be liquid or dry.
3-Prepare the Torch Lily for winter. Special winter care is required to prevent the plant from dying. Right before your first frost, tie leaves into one large bunch using garden twine. This keeps water from entering the middle of the plant and freezing.
4-Cover the ground with an inch of mulch. Start 2" from base of the plant so the mulch isn't touching the plant. extending one to two feet. This helps insulate the soil to keep it from freezing.
5-Prune back in spring after the weather has warmed up. Cut back entire plant to its base, removing all the dead foliage. It will grow back to its original lush form.
