The University of Coimbra, located in the city of Coimbra, is one of the oldest universities still in operation in Europe and the world and oldest Portugal. Its history dates back to the century following the very foundation of the Portuguese nation, as it was created in the thirteenth century, in 1290, on March 1, when it was signed in Leiria by King Dinis I, the document Scientiae Thesaurus Mirabilis, which created its own university and asked the Pope for confirmation.
