London flag leeks grow large, thick, with white stalks and are slightly bulberous (fun word) at base. Shanks up to 8 in. long and 2 in. in diameter. Mild onion flavor

A cool weather crop, they are at their best when day temperatures are below 75 degrees F.

Leeks may be planted from seed 4 to 6 weeks before the average date of the last frost or from transplants in the fall. Transplants may be set out in early spring to mid summer.Plant in full sun in rich, well-drained soil that has been amended with 1lb of complete fertilizer per 100 sqare feet. If planting seeds, do so shallowly, at only 1/8 of an inch, then thin to 9 inches apart. If setting out transplants, dig holes 6 inches deep and 9 inches apart. A double row will help save space.

Drop the leeks into the holes, but do not fill with soil. Water will collapse soil into holes over time and leeks will position themselves.

*Keep leeks watered and never let them completely dry out.

*Leeks grow well with most plants. The pungent odor emitted by the leeks confuses and repels insect pests. In addition, if you allow a few leeks to go to blossom and go to seed, the blooms will attract beneficial insects, which will further protect a nearby plant. Leeks also make good companion plants for carrots and celery. Be sure to keep a few seeds for next harvest.

Howdy elizabethawamsley,

What people are doing is setting a maximum bid. When you type in your bid, type in the maximum amount that you're willing to bid.

some folks will bid in small increments. For instance, if the current bid is set at 53, some people will try and bid 55. This sometimes works.

In most cases. Say if that same auction is set at 53, a person will come along and bid 400 credits for that item. Everyone else tryingto bid will keep being outbid until they outbid that 400 maximum credit. It's a strategy that people use to outsource or outbid other bidders. In the end.. people may give up bidding and the auction may have only gone for 125 credits. So that person who bid 400 credits, will pay 125 and get refunded the ramainder of the inititial 400 credits bid.

Placing a huge bid on an item is a 'Shock N Awe' bid strategy.

When I first started on listia.. I used to try and bid 1 or 2 credits above the current bid. I was always out bid. I learned that people will bid by bidding the maximum amount that they are willing to pay for the seeds.

Unlike that other popular auction site.. If I saw a coffee mug that I want.. and the bid is at £1.00, I wouldn't bid £10.00 in hopes that it won't go up to that amount. In other auction sites.. people bid to try and keep the bids as low as possible to pay money.

Listia is unique as to where folks love to garden. You'll see seeds being traded from all around the world. I'm sorry to say that I don't tell many people about listia because, I don't want the prices to go up. The more people that influx a website.. the prices tend to rise on the product.

My advise to you is for you to click the 'watch' button on the auction page. When the auction is in the last hour of ending... bid half the amount that you're willing to pay. If you're outbid.. wait until the auction clock is less than 10 minutes or even closer and place your maximum bid.

If that doesn't work.. you can always beg for mercy by letting other bidders know that you really, really, really, really want the seeds. Sometimes that works. Wink.

Believe me Curlysue68curls, it took me a long while to figure out the bidding process too. I bid on commercial seeds to donate to my local food bank or my backyard garden club has annual fundraisers. I make up gift baskets with seeds and a few garden tools.

Alot of people don't know that food banks also accept vegetable seeds as donation. They usually prefer seeds from seed packers. They feel more confident in giving commercial seed packets to folks then seed collected from backyard gardeners who (like me) tend to make my own little envelope to store seeds.
