The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 by a Christian socialist named Francis Bellamy. It was geared towards school children and to coinside with the 400th anniversary of Columbus' first voyage.

The Pledge of Allegiance came during a period of heavy European immigration to America during the Industrial Revolution.

The Bellamy salute was the normal way of saluting the flag until December 22, 1942 when it was replaced with right hand over heart when the Bellamy salute was judged too close to the Nazi salute.
