No doubt about it. Iceberg lettuce is the king. Iceberg is a head lettuce, the one that's by far the most popular in stores. Iceberg lettuce has a tightly formed head of crisp, sweet leaves. Leaves on the outside are green, giving way to blanched pale yellow to whitish center leaves The sweetest leaves are in the center. Growing to about a foot in diameter, iceberg lettuce is a staple in the kitchen for salads, on sandwiches, shredded in snacks, as a garnish, and an essential ingredient in countless recipes.

Directions: Iceberg lettuce seeds can be sowed directly into the garden, or started indoors.

Sow a few lettuce seeds 1/4" deep in soil or 1-2 seeds in starter cell of a seed tray. Cover very lightly with a fine starter soil. Keep soil in the seed tray moist. In about 7-10 days, the seedlings will sprout. Thin seedlings to one plant per cell.

Transplant into the garden after all danger of frost has past. Ideally, transplant them on a cool or cloudy day. Water well after transplanting. Space plants 12" apart in rows 18" apart. The soil should be rich and fertile, and well draining. Keep the soil moist. The plants respond well to regular applications of liquid fertilizer.

For a fall crop, an indoor start is best. Lettuce seeds do not germinate well in the hot soil of mid-summer.

Seed Depth: Press into surface of soil 1/4" deep
Seed Spacing: 1"
Row Spacing: 2'
Days to Emerge: 20 - 25

*Be sure to allow a plant to go to flower to collect seeds for future planting.

Howdy flashunter,

If you don't win the auction for the lettuce seed, I can relist. I'm sorry to say that I don't sell seeds. I'm just a backyard gardener who likes to seed swap. I use the credits to bid on seed auctions myself.

I use listia to collect seeds for donation to my local food bank or to plant rows for the hungry. Alot of people don't know that food banks will also accept vegetable seeds as donation. In most cases, they have to be in a packers envelope.

Because I've been growing my own heirloom vegetables and donating seeds, they glady accept my seeds which have an average of 85% germination ratio. You can purchase heirloom iceberg lettuce seeds from SeedSaver.com.

SeedSaver.org is located in Decorah, Iowa USA. Their goal is to preserve heirloom seeds by allowing backyard gardeners to plant and grow heirloom seeds so that the particular vegetables don't become extinct.

To learn more about growing a row for hunger, please visit http://americasgrowarow.org/

It's a non-profit agency that encourages backyard gardeners to grow a row of vegetables for your local food banks. It's worthy cause.

You won't find a better deal on seeds than the seed auctions listed by backyard gardeners here on listia.com.

I tend to hold back at telling people about listia.com because, I don't want the seed prices to go up. The more people who bid, means higher seed prices. Wink.
