SERPENT-RADISH ~ RARE 'TOP SET' EDIBLE PODS
READY TO EAT 5-6 WEEKS FROM PLANTING
You won't find these ancient heirloom wonders in your local garden center!
Arriving with the Colonist, this unique, fast growing and very ancient cottage garden radish was once a staple within the hearts and tables of early American settlers. Considered the 'best tasting' of all radishes, the young pods have a mild flavor with that 'bit of a kick' radish lovers desire.
Aside from great taste, Raphanus caudatus (meaning "with a tail") is an interesting visual for your cottage kitchen! First, the plant produces beautiful pale-pink and white flowers and second, the unique tailed pods grow at the 'top' of the bush instead of underground! As an edible beauty, Serpent-Radish, also known as Rats-Tail Radish, is making its ornamental and delicious comeback within cottage kitchen gardens throughout the U.S. Get your fresh seeds while they last and grow a little history in your garden this year.
PODS: Plant in fall. Leave in their protective shell and seeds will sprout evenly spaced.
SEEDS: Plant a few new seeds every couple of weeks and keep your fresh supply growing all summer long. Eat raw, cooked, pickled or stir-fried.
ANNUAL
FULL SUN
DIRECT SOW: (super fast growing so there is no need to early start in any zone)
In pots or in-ground: Plant 1" after the Spring ground has warmed in rich composted soil. Serpent-Radish is a sprawling plant and can be contained within tomato wire cages making harvest quick and easy.
WATER: 1" a week.
Organic fertilizer when seedlings have at least 2 or more leaves.
HARVEST: When pods are young and small. Older and larger pods become hard and hotter.
