Junipers are a hardy evergreen commonly used in landscapes. Juniper is an evergreen tree that is similar to a pine tree in many ways. Native to many parts of the world, including North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. Junipers are drought-tolerant and good in areas where water is in short supply. Can be used as a Bonsai tree. Many use juniper as a hedge, windbreak or privacy screen. This plant will grow in rocky, poor soils where other plants won't. Can be grown in zones 3 through 10. It grows to a height of 30 feet. Junipers are a very hardy tree down to -40 degrees F. For example, Colorado junipers grow at very high elevations in the Rocky Mountains where they receive very little rain and survive bitterly cold temperatures. These high-altitude junipers grow very slowly. Given better growing conditions, the trees grow more quickly. Junipers require very little water during periods of drought and can survive well with only a few inches of water per year. Your junipers will grow better with 2 to 3 inches of water a week. They do well in bright sun but also grow well in shade. The rounded cones of Juniper resemble berries but they are indeed cones.

Transplant junipers from containers. Dig a hole wider than the roots or root ball and as deep into the ground as the juniper is in its container. Place the tree into the hole and spread the roots out as much as you can. Fill in the hole with the dirt you took from it originally and pat it down gently. Keep the area moist during the first and second years of growth as your juniper tree takes hold.
