Yes it does my husbands laptop has windows 7 in it and windows 7 automatically picks it up....

Since it's "portable" does it have a battery pack or just electric?

It does not have a battery pack or no bpower cord it just plugs right into a usb cord and comes up as a external drive and there is a button on the left side you push to scan a item...
