Thanks. I don't actually know the difference but since it is stamped as "German Silver" I will go with what you say and say that it is German silver. Since there is a bid on it I am unable to change the title but I will add an update so people know.

German silver is also called Nickel silver. The usual formulation is 60% copper, 20% nickel and 20% zinc, no actual silver. FYI!

Interesting. I never realized precious metals were so confusing. I found the following info at this page on Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_standards

"German silver (not to be confused with nickel silver, which is also referred to by this same term) has a millesimal fineness of 800. It is one of several silver standards used in Germany, and has been in use since 1884. The alloy is 80% pure silver and 20 % copper or other metals."

Do you know of a way I can test this so bidders know what they are bidding on? I won it on eBay and it was advertised as silver. I will admit, I wouldn't know the difference between silver and aluminum but I got it for a really good price.

With pieces like this, its generally safe to go with whats marked on the piece. In this case its stamped German Silver. Pure silver would be marked .999 Fine Silver.

you might take to UR local recycle center or (junk yard) they make a gun something like a heat gun if they have one they can shoot it and it give a reading of ferrous or nonferrous metals in it.Its a very expensive gun handy though .

Thanks for the tip but this piece is pretty small. I imagine this gun is made for larger objects.
