EX extra fine condition. AU stands for almost and uncirculated. It is a grading system however used by most of us who buy and sell raw coins are just taking a stab at what condition the coin is. As you might imagine it is very subjective when most of us grade coins, however there are companies/businesses who do a better job such as ANACS Who certify and grade coins at a much more precise way than most of the rest of us. I might say my coin is AU which is just my guess. Recently someone bought such a coin and told me they were going to send it off and have it certified and graded. Hopefully it will be AU as I suggested, however there is a good chance it might be only extra fine. So very briefly that is a basic statement on grading of coins. Thank you for your question.
