On the streets of a mostly African-American neighborhood in Bedford-Stuyvesant, as the temperatures soar, so does tension and anger. Mookie is a young black man who works for Sal, an Italian-American pizza owner. Many people don’t like that Sal’s “wall of fame” only has pictures of famous Italians. They try to talk him into putting up pictures of famous black people, but Sal refuses. Other arguments take place. Then Sal gets into an argument with Radio Raheem, an angry black man who has been carrying his boom box all over the neighborhood playing “Fight the Power.” When Sal destroys the boom box, a riot begins. The police are called in, Radio Raheem is killed and Sal’s pizzeria is burned to the ground.
