Tourmaline enchanted the Empress Dowager Tz u Hsi, the last Empress of China, so much that with her great wealth she purchased almost a ton of it from San Diego, California's pregmatite district. This is one of Octobers birthstones. It has a hardness of 7 to 7.5 and is found in places like, Brazil, Kenya, Madagascar, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Zambia and USA.

You were told right, Opal is one of the birthstones for October. However, Tourmaline is also an October birthstone. I'm sure you could google this and find out. I got my facts from my book "Guides to gems and jewelry".
