The annual award for the best pitcher in each league is named for Cy, who retired with 511 wins during the deadball era. He pitched 10 seasons for now defunct teams (Cleveland Spiders, Boston Rustlers), and pitched for the Red Sox while they were known as the Boston Americans and their first season as the Red Sox, and with the St. Louis Perfectos, as well as the first season that they were known as the Cardinals. He also pitched for the Cleveland Naps, who later became known as the Indians.
