I'm not a real coin nut, but I do know a thing or two. Value depends on many factors including but certainly not limited to: Date, how the coin is physically, quantity made, and sometimes composition, for example: if it contains a certain amount of silver, the coin will always be valued by the amount of silver unless it is in better condition than in circulated condition. Key dates are also important. If you have a wheat penny of 1909 and see it says VDB on the back, no matter the condition , it will be valued at more than $100. If the coin is from the 1800s, the value of the coin will (unless there's a lot of it) always be more than twice its face value. I have a Barber dime from 1899 that's worth $8. Finally physical condition. If the coin is (for example) a 1924 wheat penny. If the penny is worse than in circulated condition, it will be worth a bit more or less 2 cents, if it's circulated, probably 10 cents..etc. For more info, you can google this: "name of coin, date (&) value" and it should give you many websites that contain charts for the specific coin searched with dates and conditions. Or you can go to this website: coinformoney.blogspot.com and just leave a question in the comments section of each post, since he's EST U.S., it depends on which time zone you live in, he'll respond between a couple hours to a day. If you have anymore questions, just contact me.
