Description

The listing, William Shakespeare I found in my attic. has ended.

A picture of William Shakespeare 8"x5 1/2"

I found this in my attic, not great shape, just ok. My husband was going to put it in the trash. I said I'll put it on Listia maybe some know more about it or wants it.

It a look like may be a print, by looking at it. When you turn on back it has red color bleed where the head is. So I don't know if this could be a water painting or something. It looks very old. It has some writing: From W.Ozias Humphry's Drawing of the Chandos Pictures made for the late W. Malone in the year 1783.There is a little rip and water damage.

Putting front photo and back photo.

very cool! gotta win this for my little lady - she's a 20 year professor of shakespeare! this would be an awesome gift for her desk, matted and framed. i don't think it is anything more than a common print out of a book, judging from it's size and condition, but still, it's a nice picture of shakespeare and i know she'd love it.

just now read through the comments here to get caught up since my last comment back when you started the auction. i'm an antiquarian bookseller by trade, so i research these things all the time. it is indeed from a book. I found the book this is from. it is page 39 of an 1824 book called An Inquiry into the Authenticity of Various Pictures and Prints offered to the Public as Portraits of Shakespeare, by Boaden, James. It is one of many black and white prints in the book, and was very likely cut out of the book and hand colored by a fan. The book has had many reprintings over the years since it is out of copyright and freely available. the original 1824 edition with all the prints is available for anywhere from $60 to $100 to $175 depending on condition. for anyone unable to get to the folger link provided above, here's the short version of the link. http://luna.folger.edu/luna/servlet/s/90o32d - have fun exploring! note that the very bottom of this item in the folger shows the printer's information, whereas the bottom of your item here simply says william shakespeare. That's the giveaway that indicates this is from the book, not a print sold by the printers for wall hanging. still, your copy is a nice find, and i believe is from the original 1824 printing, and i expect you'll get some more good bidding going on as the days past by. good luck!

one other thing - you can see the actual book at books.google.com and putting this into the search bar: An Inquiry into the Authenticity of Various Pictures and Prints offered to the Public as Portraits of Shakespeare, by Boaden, James - select one of the full view versions shown and scroll down to page 39 to see this print.

Wow, what a find! Such a good idea not to let it go in the trash...
It's not from a book, it's a print, and it could be as old as 1825. The small writing under his collar should say "Engraved by E. Scriven".
Having said that, the original 1825 prints were in black and white, so it's either a colour print made between then and 1841, when Scriven died, or more likely a hand-dyed black and white print, which would explain why the colour ran somewhat.

Check out the info in the Shakespeare Library:

This auction could be memorable... :) Wishing you all the best and watching!

Just like everyone said, it's from an older book, however it is a lithograph portrait (and painted before or after), and that in itself is very charming. Good luck on selling this charming piece!
