does the product need any software?

Yes it needs a Driver installed. HOWEVER this is a product that MICROSOFT
created the driver for which makes it most reliable. Can't speak for all computers and operating sustems BUT my Win 7 OS went online automatically and downloaded the driver instantly. I have auctioned a number of these units and received ZERO complaints. Thnx for askin'
