William Russell “Billy” Johnson (1918-2006) played nearly his entire career in the New York Yankees system and enjoyed four championships during his seven years in the Bronx. The Yankees signed Billy in 1936 and assigned him to the Class-D Butler Yankees of the Pennsylvania State League and by 1942, he had climbed the minor league ladder to reach the Double-A Newark Bears of the International League. In 1943, he played in a league leading 155 games at third base for the 1943 World Series champions, batting .300 against the St. Louis Cardinals with six hits and three RBI in 20 at-bats. Johnson spent two years serving in the United States Army, but returned in 1946 to reclaim his position at third base. In his second year back, Billy batted .285 with 141 hits and 95 RBI to earn his only All-Star selection while leading the Yankees back to the American League pennant and his second World Series title in four years. Johnson was a member of the 1949 and 1950 World Champion Yankees and was then traded to the St. Louis Cardinals as New York was grooming prospect Gil McDougald to take over at the hot corner. He played nine years with the Yankees (1943, 1946-1951) and the cardinals (1951-1953). Billy Johnson retired following he 1953 season having amassed 882 hits, 419 runs and 487 RBI while batting .271 in 964 games. In the field, he also posted a .960 fielding percentage with 1,738 assist and 174 double plays.
