Description

The listing, 1877 ALMANACK for Virginia and NC has ended.

The Warrock-Richardson Virginia and North Carolina Almanack, 1877. Published in Richmond, Virginia by James E Goode. String bound with 62 pages full of fascinating info and great ads of the time. A treasure trove for the State History buff. Book is aprox 4 x 6 and is complete, except the top half of page 42 has been neatly cut away. (must have been a great pie recipe) Covers have many small holes where the worms have helped themselves to a snack over the years. Looks as if a mouse may have nibbled the bottom right corner off too. FREE SHIPPING, be sure to check out other auction offerings from the Village.

It's a real glimpse into another time in our history. Southern farmers in 1877 had no electricity, radio was invented yet, these Almanacs were like the internet to them and were kept for years for reference. This one is string bound.

So very humbling - a little time capsule! I have a daily journal written by a farmer the same year from New Hampshire. What a treasure it is! I purchased it 30 years ago at a garage sale for 25 cents. It's given me more pleasure than any book I've ever read and has taken me on many an adventure. Fanned and watching!!!

Its one thing to read dates and events in history books, but it's a whole different experience when you read something that was actually written for the person of that period and to see how the ads were designed to address issues of a farmer's daily life right after the Civil War. Its those little things that get lost in history books.

I love it!
12 years after the Civil War and a Southern Almanac at that. What a treasure!
