The listing, RAINBOW DICHROIC GLASS and STERLING SILVER EARRINGS has ended.
I purchased these specifically to put here on Listia, because I thought that they were unique.
But, what you ask, is Dichroic glass?
Well, here is an edited version of what Wikipedia says about it.
Modern dichroic glass is available as a result of materials research carried out by NASA, who developed it for use in dichroic filters. Historically, dichroic glass dates back to at least the 4th century AD, as seen in the Lycurgus cup.
Multiple ultra-thin layers of different metals (such as gold or silver)or oxides of such metals as titanium, chromium, aluminium, zirconium, or magnesium are vaporised by an electron beam in a vacuum chamber. The vapor then condenses on the surface of the glass in the form of a crystal structure. A protective layer of quartz crystal is sometimes added.
The finished glass can have as many as 30 to 50 layers of these materials. The coating that is created is very similar to a gemstone and, by careful control of thickness, different colors may be obtained.
A plate of dichroic glass can be fused with other glass in multiple firings. Due to variations in the firing process, each piece of fused dichroic glass is unique.
So now that we both know what it is I can tell you that they are new, and the earrings and wire hooks are both marked 925. If you set one on a coin the size of a quarter all edges of the coin is visible, but not much more. So, they are large enough to see, but I don't think that they are obnoxious or gaudy. The amazing swirls of colors will compliment a lot of outfits.
Thanks for looking at my auction.
