Description

The listing, 60 gourd seeds has ended.

Last chance for planting this year. I have Luffa, 2 kinds of Bottle, apple, watermelon gourds & one that mutated from the apple & bushel. As you can see my watermelon gourd grew to almost 12 inches & that wasn't the biggest. The Luffas are wonderful to use it the bath/shower. You will never go back to those old hard ones again. Welcome to ask any questions. And happy bidding

Normally, The plants will start to died out in Sept or Oct. Once they start growing the vines you might want to hang them up so the bottle gourds can grow correctly. Also, I noticed that I would have to watch the ones on the ground (because you have to water them everyday) that those didn't rot. I would place them on a rock or a piece of wood if it looked to be a good gourd. They take effort in the beginning due to you must keep the ground moist/wet for the plants to start & then a little effort to water everyday & watch for worms, rot & how your gourds are growing. I let one group get away from me & the gourds actually grew into the rabbit wire!!! I could use them & it looked weird but it was a waste. Hope I answered all your questions. Please feel free to ask me anything. I will send any info on planting, growing & harvest with the seeds as needed & required. Thank you

First the planting of the seeds. Here in Texas I plant no later than the middle to late April (when we are sure that there is no more freezing nights). Loosen the ground & plant seeds about 11/2 -2 inches down. I normally put two per hole. Place seeds about a foot to 18 inches apart. You might want to build a arch for them to grow on (due to the gourds like to hang down) but this is not necessary. I did this plus they grew on my fence & over; then down the alley! You might see worms on the plants & then you need to spray for these as they will eat your fruit. The gourds will dry on the plant. When it is yellow & dry you can pick it off. I have picked the fruit off when it was still green due to it was as large as I wanted. I laid the green gourds on a screen to dry in the sum with turning them each day. There are excellent info on ehow.com on growing, drying & etc when you are ready. I have so many seeds that I felt that the two auctions would be the max that people would want to see. But if they can be put in another one or two auctions I think that I will have plenty. Hope this answered your questions. Let me know if you have more. I am strictly a self taught grower with a little instructions from the person that gave me my first seeds. I also have a "devils horn" that has seeds in it. Guess I should plant this year so I can share them also.

They do bloom as flowers. Then close up & make a pod. If you have seen squash bloom & then close it is the same. The gourd comes from the family of things like squash, pumpkins, etc. I will dig through all my gourds to pick out the best of the best. Like I put in the description...I grew them for several years & the apple & bushel mixed to make a mutant so it is a huge almost apple/bushel. I love it! I didn't think that they would do that but then I have a rose bush that we pulled to pot (yellow) & in its place in the ground grew a red climbing rose. Things weird happen in my backyard!!! :) And a "devils horn" or claw grows down here in the SW. I will break my one open & send my winners a seed from it. Look them up online & you will see what they look like. Let me know if you have any more questions.

I found that Sevin dust will kill all the bugs that bother any vegetable plant. The first year I would pick the worms off & throw them away. Then I got rot so, I caught it in time before it spread to the plant or the others & cut/picked the leaves & destroyed them. I was a child of nature that year. But the following I just dusted the plants so I didn't have to spend as much time out there. It gets hot & dry down here in W Texas.

Not to worry. I think they are a little creepy! But I have a friend who made a Mrs & Mr and then put them in a sled. It really was cute for Christmas decorations.

I did the planting the way a friend told me to do. The rest was by trial & error. Mostly error. I never thought of looking online or even going to the library. (I am a little slow at times, or so I have been told by my family) :) But if you need any help you can always just yoller at me & I will try to answer your questions, if I can or have an answer. The rot was what almost did me in the first year. It was a good thing that it was starting at the end of growing season. I had gourds running out of my ears! I am down to the last ones & it doesn't look like I will be able to go out & dig in the dirt anymore so, all I have is the experience to pass along to the rest. Be sure to watch out for the cross pollination because that is how I got the weird big apple/bushel gourds. It is fun to see what "mother nature" does! Have fun growing & making things out of the gourds. The best thing I did was make a bank for a kid I know. I have to take a picture & pass along to the lady who got the last gourds. My ideas mostly came from Native American jewelry. But the bank was the best!

Done deal! Like I said it was due to a lot of trail & error.... a lot of error. If I only thought about the internet, well, I would have done so much better. The gourds were fun to play with but if I had another person to help clean, sand & etc with me after the harvest, I probably would have kept doing them or at least more than I did. If you get your hands on some good "long handle" seeds, there is a festival in Austin that you can win a lot of $$ if you grow the longest &/or the best! I think that would be fun!!!! Plus Austin is a Party Town. I am way to old to do that but if I were younger....oh, yeah, I did that already. LOL
