can you put this in the freezer or microwave?

yes. You can put it in the freezer for just half an hour and it a great cold pack. It goes in the microwave 30 seconds at a time on high untill it reaches your comfort zone and remains hot for hours. I actually heat them before spa parties and put them all in a lunch cooler. They stay plenty warm in there for hours.
