The listing, "FIRST YEAR" "WITH CENTS" "FULL LIBERTY" AU 1883 LIBERTY "V" NICKEL has ended.
This auction is for a 1883 "With Cents" Liberty "V" Nickel Gold Plated.
As the 1883 Liberty V Nickel, it is Almost Uncirculated, showing a Full Liberty, With Cents variety and has been Gold Plated.
This is a perfect example of someone who does not know the history of a coin and in an attempt to make it worth more money they tried to turn it into what was considered a "RACKETEERS NICKEL". The "Racketeers Nickel" was an 1883 nickel without the "CENTS" on the reverse side and it was plated in Gold to pass it off as the $5 Gold Piece that was the twin to the 1883 Nickel except for the "Reeding" on the edges and obviously solid Gold. The government figured out what people were doing and added the "CENTS" to the reverse to show that it was a nickel.
This coin has the "CENTS" on its reverse which actually make it a bit more than 10 times more valuable than the "NO CENTS" version and was never used to pass off as the $5 Gold Piece. I guess that the worth of this coin is added to by having yourself a small amount of Gold, but mostly, it just shows the "Ignorance" of who plated the coin in Gold.
Look up the worth of an "Almost Uncirculated" Liberty "V" Nickel and you will see that this coin is still worth a pretty penny, as they say.
