He assisted in the birth of almost every child in the area for forty=three years, he tended to their ills, aches and emergencies and, when their time came, he signed their death notices. Such was the life and career of Doctor John Stevens, the only medical man for 100 miles in any direction.

If you were ill, he came right over to your home, black bag in hand and a comforting smile that told the entire family that everything would be fine. He set broken arms and legs, removed a spike from your foot, and tended to your most serious influenza. He always accepted a meal or some crops, or even and I.O.U., if you couldn't pay for his services at the moment.

When the mine blew up, he rounded up six or seven of the local folks, quickly taught them how to tend to the wounds of the thirty or so miners, and established the beginnings of a hospital, right there in his home. He was indeed a friend to all, and one of the most respected and admired citizens of the community.
