Description

The listing, 1944 "Shell Case" Lincoln Wheat Penny U.S. One Cent Coin has ended.

It was an era when even our money went to war. The U.S. Mint faced a daunting task. Copper and nickel were in short supply and were desperately needed for munitions. The solution was to substitute various metals for the minting of pennies and nickels.
Because of the confusion created by the steel cent minted in 1943, the U.S. Mint stopped issuing them. The following year coins returned to copper combined with salvaged brass from the spent cartridge shells of U.S. servicemen. Their issuance helped to boost American morale and inspire a more concerted effort to conserve resources on the home front.
