They could aslo be attached to a watch chain as a fob or attached to opera glasses hence the chain attachement that you see. This is a very nice item and someone will be very happy with it I am sure!! I just wanted to share some knowledge on this wonderful item. Mourning jewelry is almost always black and is hardly ever seen with colored stones or lavish adornment. Happy Bidding!!!!
This is actually called a viniette ring. It was used by ladies around a century ago. It was filled with a cloth or sponge usually which was dipped in perfume or favored scent. When they walked down the street and come upon a horrid smell(things weren't quit as clean as they are today) they opened they ring and took a sniff to prevent passing out from what ever offended there nose! Just thought you guys would want to know!
Your Welcome!! I love antiques and sharing knowledge on things. The more one knows about an item the better. Not only for bidders but also for sellers. This is a very nice piece and it could go throught the roof! Fanned and Watching!!!
I had no intention at all of "cutting down" this auction whatsoever. Mourning and rememberance jewelery and related items are an extremely good market and I thought the seller or potential bidders would like to know what they potentially have. This was also why I asked for further info to help identify. Take note- not everyone is mean, sorry you chose to take it that way. I thought according to what I read further info and positive comments/questions were welcome
It is not necessarily a "poison ring" those are very difficult to prove and rare when you do. More than likely it is a piece of rememberance or mourning jewelery and the receptacle is meant to hold a coiled lock of hair. Is there any type of lining in the receptacle or anything left of a seal around the lid?
yes i know its not necessarily a poison ring, however thats what ive always called them and i think in mideivl times thats what they were used as. mine however i used for my headaches i placed very tiny lavendar beads inside so i had the scent with me throuhgout the day. no there is no lining or seal that i see
Thats no chain attachment its the ring closure or lock,i have several of these & use them for my heart meds NITRO.& use clear nail polish for inside sealer.watching & fanned u.
Morning jewelry actually had the hair coil as part of the jewelry itself. A poison or viniette ring was used for medicinal purposes like you have been doing. They were just as much called poison because of the Di Mechi family of using a medicinal ring to poison enemies.
very cool i wish i had the credits to bid that wood be a great gift to give my daughter when she old enough i dont see these that offten she loves diffrent things she 11 and wood be nice to give and let her hand down t her kid one day and on down the line bless you for giving and congrats to the winner this is nice
Yes it is the closure for the ring but is also used for attaching to a watch or opera glass chain to be used as a fob. This is a viniette ring!!! Nice item!! Good luck to everyone!
the blue one is the one that is still available, i wasnt sure how to get the pic off, it wont let me now that people have placed bids. sorry for any confusion!!
HEHE well I know back in the day they started out as that, and it led to other things. but when i was in school i got migraines bad so i put lavender beads in mine
