about the only way I have seen anyone kill this stuff, is to try to grow it in a saltwater tank. I know the feeling, when I started with live plants, I ended up killing a ton of them, but that was years ago...and I still kill a few of the harder to grow ones...lol

I have a western painted and a red ear slider in my 50gal. They are both full grown.
Then I have a baby Mississippi map turtle in a 20long. If I win, would I need to buy tank plant food or it just lives off the water/waste? LOL never had live plants, always wanted though.

Your painted and red ear might eat some of it, not sure about the mud turtle, never owned or worked with one of those. It grows very well on just water waste and light. No fertilizer needed at all. I started mine in a livebearer tank less than 3 years ago, with about half what I will be sending in this auction, and within a year, I was having to thin it out about every other month, (but I didn't have anything that even thought about eating it) and that was in just the fish waste in the water, and light from a 25 watt soft white flourescent light. Any light will work, just as long as the moss remains damp, it will grow and be fine. This is a true beginner's live plant, nearly impossible to kill from my experience, and at the same time useful in so many applications.

does it make tankes dirty
Apr 11th, 2012 at 1:51:30 PM PDT by
Original
Evan79, no, it does not make tanks dirty, but it does collect little "bugs" that baby fish love to eat, and that help polish your tank. if you shake the plant up after it has settled in one spot for a time, those tiny critters will fly off of it, and make the tank look dirty for a little while...if you don't like that idea, just take the plant out of the tank every few months, and shake it around in some clear old tank water when you do a water change to rinse it off. Live plants are great for almost any tank, providing natural, safe hiding places for baby or shy fish, and the added benefit of removing some of the nasty stuff the fish leave in the water (fish poop) for the plant's use as fertilizer.

were do the bugs come from
Apr 12th, 2012 at 3:40:07 PM PDT by

The 'bugs' are micro organisms that are in most all fresh water supplies, things like rotifers, and paramecium. You can do a google search for these things, it will tell you a lot about them. They are totally harmless, and do a lot of good in a well balanced aquarium. Also, java moss is a great place for nitrifying bacteria to hang out, and those are a big part of the biological filtration in your tank.

I have fancy goldfish is this good for my tank?
Apr 15th, 2012 at 5:51:26 AM PDT by

it would be fine with goldfish, it is one of the plants that they don;t seem t eat much of, though they will pick at it and keep any algae off it. As long as it gets some form of light it should do fine for you.

I've had brackish and salt tanks since 2000, my very favs!
I'll be watching! (A new auction heads-up never hurt!)

Thanks, keep watching, as the plants will do quite well for you, as they will be used to Michigan water.

As I said, I'm just getting back into th hobby after a 5 year break, the only plants that I have ready at this time is the java moss, though I have a few other plants that I will be taking cuttings or young plants from in the near future, including elkhorn fern(a broad leaf water sprite) corkscrew val, giant hygro, java fern, C. wendetii. and a couple others that I don't remember off hand. most of these do not do well in a cichlid tank though, I am growing them in with my guppies and other livebearers.

They have the silk/plastic plants in there tanks but they are always digging them up.
I know turtles like snails, but ram-horn snails are a pest and re-produce like rabbits.
Which end up over running your tank in months. =( I don't need any of those.

Java moss is a non rooted, naturally sinking plant, it will be fine with turtles moving it around, though if they break it up too much, it will grow all the faster, and it might become a pest its self. I don't know what type of turtles you have, but some turtles will snack on it as well, so if it disappears instead of growing, you would know why.

I have turtles in all of my tanks, so would it be health for them?
Also do you have snails in that tank? I asking cause i wouldn't want to put it into my tank then be infested with snails =/ LOL
Apr 10th, 2012 at 5:00:12 PM PDT by
Original
There are no snails in the tank, it sure would not hurt the turtles to have some plants in their tank, and for future reference, turtles love ramshorn and pond snails as snacks.
