U.S. #1100 was issued in conjunction with a centennial celebration of the birth of noted horticulturalist Liberty Hyde Bailey. Bailey (1858-1954) founded the College of Agriculture at Cornell University in 1888, & was the dominant figure in the field of horticulture until his death on Christmas Day in 1954. He was also the co-founder of the American Society for Horticultural Science in 1903, & wrote 65 books on the subject.
This stamp was issued in Ithaca, New York – site of Cornell University. It marked the beginning of the Liberty Hyde Bailey Centennial Celebration. The first “Liberty Hyde Bailey Award” was issued that same year, to honor “great American gardeners.”
