Sow brussel sprout seeds either in ground or start in container. Planting is generally from spring to early summer in North; in South and other frost-free areas, sow from fall to spring. In rows 24" apart, sow seeds thinly and cover with 1/4" of fine soil. Firm lightly and keep evenly moist.

Does anyone know if when the top of a cabbage/flower stalk has been removed, do they revert back and grow like sprouts? Im asking as a member of family chopped off the tops of some of mine by accident and they now looking a little like the 2nd pic on here. Bust the balls not as large inbetween the leafs near base of plants?

I think the plant will do just fine. If anything, pull one of the small heads off when it begins to dry at the end of the season. It may be a seed pod. Brussel and cabbage produce seeds in small/mini cabbage heads. It's best to allow them to dry on the plant before pulling off for the seeds. But it's common for small heads to grow on older leaves. They're still delicious and good for pan frying. Cut them in half, fry with onion or garlic and a pinch of spicey pepper seeds and life will be good for the moment.

What I would do is 'shock and awe' the plant by giving it a double or triple dose of fertilizer. Cow manure is my choice of fertilizer and I swear by seaped cow manure tea (compost tea). Instead of having a compost pile on your property, simply fill a bucket or rubbish bin 1/4 full of cow manure and the rest with water. Churn it daily and by three days time, you have the most excellent fertilizer.

Folks who grow giant vegetables like the mixture. It's a super power fertilizer. Here's a link on how to make manure tea (compost tea). Once you use it, you'll always use it. You'll see 100% difference in your flowers, vegetabls and fruit trees. My grape plants produce 100 fold compared to my neighbour. I won't tell him what I use either. wink.

Yep. They'll continue to grow.

I've had cabbage that's about 2 years of age now continue to grow heads. We're lucky to have long growing seasons here in southern Califrnia. I simply cut the head off about 1-2 inches above the ground level. That's about where the stem of the cabbage is.

Most people will twist the cabbage off the stem but, I never had success with that. I tend to rib the entire plant out. Cabbage are hardier plants than most other plants. The cabbage will sprout another when one has been taken off or damaged. It's the circle of life for the plant. next generation does grow a bit smaller but, it's still excellent for eating.

As for brussel sprouts.. it's always best to harvest from the bottom up. If a brussel sprout gets whacked off from the top.. it'll be ok and continue to grow.

Hey, i done an auction to show you what i ment. I just done the pics.
Take a look if you want. Im not doing something write as they dont look like cabbage. Its a four day auction, so if you click my username you could find the pics under my cabbage listing. Dont worry about posting comments about it, write what you want. I planted the seeds at the end of August last year i think. Then i put them where they are in the pictures in October. They lasted through the winter. 4weeks ago i dug each one up and took the bottom couple of inches of leaves off to eat, then replanted them 4inches deeper in the same growing patch. The ones that had the tops snapped off i didnt take many leaves off, just planted them a bit deeper. Lol the tall ones look more like runner beans than cabbage you buy in shops. Have a look. Remember You can write whatever you want about them, or any ideas, not really important what other bidders see as im not wanting loads of credits for them.
