Leaves on the outside are green, giving way to blanched pale yellow to whitish center leaves The sweetest leaves are in the center. Growing to about a foot in diameter, iceberg lettuce is a staple in the kitchen for salads, on sandwiches, shredded in snacks, as a garnish, and an essential ingredient in countless recipes.

Directions: Iceberg lettuce seeds can be sowed directly into the garden, or started indoors.

Sow a few lettuce seeds 1/4" deep in soil or 1-2 seeds in starter cell of a seed tray. Cover very lightly with a fine starter soil. Keep soil in the seed tray moist. In about 7-10 days, the seedlings will sprout. Thin seedlings to one plant per cell.

Transplant into the garden after all danger of frost has past. Ideally, transplant them on a cool or cloudy day. Water well after transplanting. Space plants 12" apart in rows 18" apart. The soil should be rich and fertile, and well draining. Keep the soil moist. The plants respond well to regular applications of liquid fertilizer.

For a fall crop, an indoor start is best. Lettuce seeds do not germinate well in the hot soil of mid-summer.

Seed Depth: Press into surface of soil 1/4" deep
Seed Spacing: 1"
Row Spacing: 2'
Days to Emerge: 20 - 25

*Be sure to allow a plant to go to flower to collect seeds for future planting.

Ol' advise for planting lettuce from a prisoner in jail:

A prisoner in jail receives a letter from his wife:

"Dear Husband, I have decided to plant some lettuce in the back garden. When is the best time to plant them?"

The prisoner, knowing that the prison guards read all mail, replied in a letter:

"Dear Wife, whatever you do, do not touch the back garden. That is where I hid all the money."

A week or so later, he received another letter from his wife:

"Dear Husband, You wouldn't believe what happened, some men came with shovels to the house, and dug up all the back garden."

The prisoner wrote another letter back:

"Dear wife, now is the best time to plant the lettuce."

Thank you kindly ryladie99. Iceberg is an American favourite. It's more disease and pest resistant. Iceberg is also called cabbage lettuce or crisphead in Ireland and UK. Iceberg is a good hardy variety. ~LosAngeles
