Benito Mussolini was the dictator of Italy and allie of Adoph Hitler during WW2.He was Prime Minister (Oct. 1922) until he was deposed by King Victor Emmanuel III ( July, 1943) following the invasion of Sicily by the U.S. and her allies.
Mussolini was rescued from captivity by German paratroopers and SS commandos Sept. 12, 1943. Adolf Hitler then put Mussolini in charge of a puppet regime in northern Italy.
In April 1945, Mussolini and his mistress Clara Petacci attempted to flee to Switzerland, but both were captured by Italian communists and executed by firing squad .
