Description

The listing, Civil War Confederate Gen. J. E. Johnston has ended.

A rare steel engraved portrait of Confederate Gen. J. E. Johnston with probably an engraved autograph (although autograph appears to be in different print than picture?) The engraving is from the 1870's and was matted by my aunt probably in the 1950's. The portrait is in an 8 x 10 Conderate gray matte. Gen. Johnston was the commander of forces opposing Union Gen. Sherman's attack on Atlanta. Years later he would be a pallbearer for Gen. Sherman and at the funeral he caught pneumonia that would kill him.
Questions & Comments
Original
Gen. Johnston would be relieved of command by Confederate President Jefferson Davis for failing to stop Sherman's army. He would later write a book denouncing Davis and his leadership. He would be a hero throughout the South and after the war worked hard to unite the country. Strangely enough the old enemy would be a friend and pallbearer for the Union General who defeated his army.

I have been asked about the autograph and have been told by two "experts" that it is a printed autograph done at the time of the picture printing and by one "expert" that it is a real autograph as the ink is different than the ink on engraved picture. This expert said Johnston attended many Confederate reunions and events and was known to autograph programs, pictures, and other Civil War items. Truthfully, I don't know which expert is correct. Sorry not much help with that question.

Johnston was not in best of health when his former enemy and later friend Gen. Sherman passed away. Johnston, inspite of poor health, insisted on attending the funeral and serving as a pallbearer. It was at the funeral he caught pneumonia which led to his death shortly after.

The matte is 8 x 10, so will fit in commercial frames so do not need special framing for this item!
