Description

The listing, Russian Comfrey ONE LIVE PLANT has ended.

This is for ONE live root of Russian Comfrey. The photo is the mother plant from where this root will be dug.

Comfrey is a bushy perennial, that, like a peony, will die back after the frosts and come up again in the spring. It has large furry leaves and a spike of mauve flowers, which hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies just love. I use it in the compost, too; I cut the comfrey down just after it flowers and it will come right back. The furry leaves add wonderful nitrogen to the mulch. Some years I can get three harvests from it!

Comfrey has long hairy tap roots, and if you leave one hair behind when you move it, it will grow again. Trust me, I know - that's why I've got so much of it ha ha! Plant it where you want it to stay. I've got it in full sun, I've got it in full shade; I can't seem to kill the danged stuff, so give it a try even if you have brown fingers LOL!

You will receive one piece of root, dug from this clump (don't worry, I know it will come back again!). This is for ONE live plant. I promise you the plant is live when I dig it up. The photo is from the parent bush under my crab apple trees. I know this will grow, and I will ship it in a timely fashion, but I do not guarantee that if you leave it in the box for a week and do not tend to it that it will still be alive. Please play fair.

I'm going to guess 2 - 8, as this grows just about everywhere in the continental US.

Research seems to say 3 - 9. Here in IL, we've had it as low as -20 in the winter and +112 in the summer, doesn't seem to phase it at all, if that helps. eHow.com says the following:

"Before you plant comfrey, take care to choose the proper spot. This is a plant that will always regrow in the same area unless you deliberately kill it.

"Comfrey prefers full sunlight and a cooler climate. This plant will also do well in partial shade with damp soil. In sunlight, the plant will do best if it is well-watered. Comfrey is hardy to USDA zone 3. Because of its large root system, the plant's leaves don't normally wilt during times of extended drought.

"The plant will grow in a variety of soils but does best in soil that is fertile and moist. Avoid shallow soils because of the plant's deep root system. Comfrey doesn't like dry, sandy soils or well-drained soils."
