Gold Foil Stamps Off of the First Day of Issue Covers

I know next to nothing about this aspect of stamp collecting. Just how thin are these stamps. Do they weigh any part of a grain?

As you know, gold foil can be compressed down into extremely thin sheets...much thinner than a normal sheet of paper. So...with that said....One single stamp weighs next to nothing. They have no monetary value whatsoever.....just collector's value. However, one thing I've always wondered about.....if you were to take a large stack of them (just the gold stamps, I'm talking about....not the whole envelope), THEN you would have something that would move the scale. Since they ARE truly 22 or 23k....what kind of value would you then have? I don't know! Maybe someday I'll try that out.

By the way.....good job on the 20¢ block. I was SO looking forward to a nice battle over that. I'm afraid Mother Nature took over and I ended up in the hospital. I reached the point where I couldn't put if off any longer. Another kidney stone. I'd been wrestling with the thing since friday. They have been my curse and cross to bear since 1982. Anyway....I'm glad to see they were won by someone who truly appreciates them. I look forward to the next battle. Heh heh

With these separated from the envelope and placed on a scale do you think you could get a reading. Sorry to learn about your kidney problems. God I'm glad that stuff by passed me but I've got my own problems as well. That was a rather fun auction. I like it when I can let it loose with little concern for a ceiling. I actually went in and out on that auction. Glad to win it at 17-7 but as I said sorry about your health. Have a good time Big D.

I'm sure you could, IF you had a digital scale....which I don't. I just piled them all on my "ancient" scale, and it says almost an ounce....BUT, that's with all the plastic, paper backing and felt....just as pictured. Not a very accurate reading.

Yes, I imagine most of us have our own medical "issue". (God, I hate that "modern" term.....the proper word is PROBLEM!) In my case, I'm very used to it. NBD!

I've been collecting "goldies", as I call them, for many, many years. I have over 2,000 now. I recently managed to weed out the duplicates. I used to buy whole collections off ebay, with some that included the decorative album. I've always thrown out the album, AND the historical info cards that came with it. Just takes up space, and, as far as I'm concerned, worthless. I know some people disagree with that, and that's cool, but the only thing involved that has any real value is the cover and the stamps on it. While the history cards are "nice", if you will, it ends up making an album twice as thick. Anyway....I got off track there.....what I'm getting at is, a long time ago I decided I'd be smart and melt it down into a drop of 22-23k gold. HA! You touch one of those things with a match, and it basically disintegrates into nothingness. That's how thin the foil really is. Just being completely honest, in case anyone has that in mind. I wouldn't waste your credits. Oh yeah....I also tried to peel it off. It's compressed onto a thin block of a hard sponge type of material. THAT didn't work well either. I tore it all up. Heh Heh! You have to understand that I had tons of duplicates back then. That happens when you buy whole collections. I think, in my feeble opinion, that if someone could figure out HOW to separate the foil from the block, and you had a whole stack of them....THEN you would have something that was almost pure gold. If I had it all to do over, I wouldn't have got rid of all those duplicates....researched how to separate the foil...and give it a good shot. But, hindsight is so easy, isn't it! I mean, the fact is, it really IS almost pure, solid gold. Just very, very, VERY thin.

Well here we go again. I brought it to a thousand and still retain a losing status. I'll have to check the auction tally sheet on the right and go visit the high bidder and think a bit more on it. Good chance that this time you will benefit from my curiosity.

Ha! I'm the same way. If something sparks my curiosity, I've been known to throw credits at it like there's no tomorrow. Just so I can know for myself! Sometimes it worked out good, and, sometimes.....well...let's just say....NOT so good. But I still had fun! What else matters besides that?
