Questions & Comments
wow, they are gorgius, i see these are the blue ones, wow, it had to be beautiful out there. when these are in bloom. i just love flowers , do they like shaded area's, most of my tiny yard is shaded by a big tree and a whole lot of others around me. i only have a very small area on my patio thats get sun all the time. i'm going to put some planters there.
I have seen them in shaded yards but mostly on the highway. Its the most beautiful time of year when they all bloom. You will see people every day stopping to take pics of it! not just tourist but Texans too! Sad thing is they take their kids out there for family pics and we have tons of copper head snakes and rattle snakes. All too often there is a report of someone doing that and the kids getting bitten! its awful! I took my for pics but cleared out an entire area first! Just had the flowers behind them but my kids are still alive! Safety first!
My wife LOOOOOVES Bluebonnets!! I would LOVE to win enough to cover our whole yard (I wouldn't have to mow for the period that they grow then LOL!!!) I'm certainly bidding on these for my wife!!
I always lived in Texas until 2yrs ago and that is one thing I miss is the beautiful wildflowers along the highways. I am in AZ now and I think the state flower is a cactus. They are pretty but can't hold a candle to TX wildflowers.
Plus you cant hold a cactus! lol. I lived n Amarillo my entire life until 8 years ago I moved to the Dallas area and it is Night and day differences! No flowers there just like the desert to me. Here it is breath taking for the few weeks that the hwy is covered is just a sight to see! I dont think a photo in the world can do it justice!
I lived in Amarillo for my entire life til 8 years ago I moved into the Dallas area. It is just one of the greatest gifts I think God gives us every year! (our flowers in TX)
I sent it to everyone that had already bid as a special way to thank everyone that helped this auction get to where it is now! Thank you all again for supporting my Listia addiction! lol
I must ask: what is slug bait? We have LOTS of snails....Will this help or hurt the bluebonnets( as they actually eat and seemingly kill lots of our other plants)???
I found this on slug bait but I am sure there are many other places that will explain what slug bait is. http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7427.html VERY INTERESTING! I think slugs and snails are so cute but you are right they are so destructive to our gardens and flower beds! Hope this helps!
Bluebonnets take a while to grow. To speed up growth, you can scarify the seed. To do this, scratch the seed, slightly breaking the shell before planting. Scarified seeds usually germinate in 10 to 12 days. If you live in an area where the climate is not ideal for growing bluebonnets outside, you can try following the same instructions but plant them in a pot inside.
Have patience; bluebonnets grow all winter long before flowering around March. They are a perennial flower, which means after you plant it in the fall, it will flower in the spring, reseed for next fall and bloom again in the spring. So, once you have a good patch, you should never have to replant them.

Plant the seeds about 10 to 12 inches apart. This will give them plenty of room to grow. You do not need to dig a hole to plant the seed, but press it slightly into the soil with your hand or by walking on it. Cover it with enough soil so that birds and bugs cannot harm the seed.
Water your bluebonnet seeds lightly on the day of planting, but do not water your bluebonnets on a regular basis. You should not have to water them except on the day you plant them. If fall or winter rain or snow is low, then you can lightly water the seeds. Snow does not harm the bluebonnet as it grows because it doesn't bloom until later. The winter growth helps it build a strong root system.
Cover the area with slug bait or pill-bug bait until the bluebonnets are well-established. Sow bugs, pill bugs and slugs all love bluebonnets. Covering the area with bait should keep the bugs from harming the seeds.
I had no idea how rare the seeds are til today. I just researched and found that even though they grow like crazy the seeds are a rare find! I am so glad I figure out I could harvest them!
Well, I bid all I had on this and still lost out....Thanks sharing...too bad it won't be coming home with me....God bless you, this auction, and the winner of it...
