John Wayne plays the tough sheriff, John T. Chance with his two deputies, one a drunk and the other a cripple. Together they try and stop an army of gunmen trying to spring a murderous sidekick from jail. When a friend of the Sheriff's is killed, a trail hand..(Ricky Nelson) joins their rank and together they bring Rio Bravo back to a law abiding town.
