Wilbur (1867-1912) and Orville (1871-1948) Wright were self-taught inventors and engineers. They built a controlled, powered, heavier-than-air machine that flew for 12 seconds and 120 feet at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on December 17, 1903.
