Britain has always had a strong navy since King Henry VIII and his daughter, Queen Elizabeth I and her sea dogs like Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh.

Halifax, my birth city and the site of my May 2010 homecoming vacation, has been a major seaport for the Royal Navy since it's founding.

The British used Halifax as a base to supply, load and unload ships, troops and sailors during the Revolutionary War, War of 1812 and both World Wars.

Moored in the Halifax Harbour and near the Maritime Museum is a Flower Class corvette named HMCS Sackville. Singer John Spearn paid homage to this ship and the Battle of Atlantic with a song titled The Corvettes of Halifax. I have this a song in my MP3 library.

Up for grabs is a 2016 uncirculated Battle of the Atlantic toonie. Britain needed nickel, lumber from the forests of BC, and other raw materials were loaded onto freighters. These freighters had to navigate the choppy seas of the North Atlantic with aeroplanes loaded with depth charges for air cover. Once out of aeroplane range, these corvettes and freighters had to run the gauntlet of U Boats and their torpedoes. This was a thankless job with many dangers. 36,000 merchant sailors were killed by torpedoes or the cold North Atlantic ocean. Many freighters were sunk until SONAR and hedgehog depth charges were installed on corvette and other escorting ships.

Bobby Orr's father served on a boat in WWII. This two dollar toonie pays homage to the brave sailors that fought to keep Canada free. Even Canadian troops disembarked from Pier 21 to fight in both World Wars. Of all the Commonwealth Nations that fought for the British, Canada was first to declare war vs Nazi Germany.
