50 Cabbage seeds - "Golden Acre" 100 Lettuce seeds - "All the year round"
I put 3pics in for any bug advice people may have. Im 90% sure its not catapillers as ive checked and checked and not found any yet. Last year I let radish go to seed in mid summer. I found Cleverly disguised green cats on them every now and again. But these im sure its something else munching them. I have read it could be beetles. But the trail ends there.
Questions & Comments
I planted them late last year (around september ' ish) they survived winter though. Maybe thats why they grown tall, but an accident moving fence panels last month cut a few of the tops off, thats what the close up pics are of. Any tips or advise, post what you want. Im not bothered what other Listia members can see.
I've never planted cabbage so I don't know. But what I can suggest is that you try companion planting with the cabbage, it will deter insects. Do a search on the internet, there are all kinds of charts and advise so you don't have to use insecticides. Flowers like marigolds and nastursiums and herbs like sage and basil will keep the bugs away, they don't like the smell.
yer, yer, I was already onto that companian thingy. Theres garlic, onions, spring onions, leek, radish, cabbage, beetroot, parsley, rocket, peas, beans, cabbage. Also loads of string and some empty clear bottles filled with water (cat issues,)which if i have to i will use my .22 pellet gun on) end of the day, its tresspassing cats dig up around plants, have a ***** and then cover it and go. Only if you let them get away with it.
If bidding does not reach 250, I will not send for free next time, if i list this auction again. £1.10 i have got the weight to, post fees will going up in 2weeks aswell. Dam Democracy.
. . . For the cats using your bare soil as their personal loo (did I get the British right?) stick coffee stirrers, wooden skewers, cut off straws or some such in the ground every few inches. Pokes 'em in the but so they leave it alone. Or mulch with aged wood chips or straw or pine needles over a coupla layers of overlapped newspaper. Also helps keep down weeds & conserve soil moisture.
. . . Your munchers may be slugs, snails or nocturnal caterpillars or other night feeders. Go out after dark maybe 1 or 2 hours or an hour before dawn with a flashlight & a jar or pail of soap solution & knock the little buggers into it to achieve their demise..
Thanks, i been collecting some more twigs and laying them inbetween plants, i may try using some old holly leaves. Also been told to try pieces of lemon as its poisonous to cats. Went out at 2am this rainy morning, found nothing on the plants only a real small thin slug close by, funny, straight after i squahsed it, out the corner of my eye i spotted a frog hoping towards the pond, may of been stalking it real slow lol
