The listing, CIVIL WAR GEN. U.S. GRANT PICTURE has ended.

1880's steel plate picture of U.S. Grant in Civil War uniform. This old picture is in an 8 x 10 light blue oval matte. The matting was done probably in the 1950's by an aunt of mine. The picture contains a signature probably a printed signature from the steel engraving plate of the picture. This picture is in extremely good condition for it's age perhaps due to fact aunt did not put it on wall and had it tucked away in a drawer for many years. The 8 x 10 matte allows for use of commercial frames rather than more expensive custom framing. A great historical piece in time for the 150 anniversary of the Civil War (War of Northern Aggression for my southern friends!).

Gen. Grant spend his final days writing his autobiography to pay off his debts and provide for his widow. The book would be published by Mark Twain who left all of the profits for Mrs. Julia Grant, his widow. He liked an occasional cigar but when folks heard this they sent him cigars by the hundreds and he increased his smoking habit and suffered from cancer in his last days, a victim of gifts from his many supporters and admirers.
