Boy that's a really good question, and a question I can't answer..
Sorry, I rarely deal with this type of item. However, I do know that the last owner had it for at least 20-30 yrs, so I would classify it as a vintage piece; no older then 100yrs, but older then 25yrs. Sorry I couldn't be of more help..

After doing some research on the many different types of Bone Carved Ivory, I found that the range in price varies from $0.99 - $1,000 depending on; 1, the type of bone. 2, the size of the piece. 3, the carver of the piece and where its origin. and 4, the age of the piece.
The difference between genuine ivory carvings and bone sculpture being sold as ivory. Dentine, which forms around tooth pulp, comprises most of the elephant or hippo tusk. Ivory has a glossy surface and a dentine line throughout it. Bone carvings, sometimes passed off or mistaken for ivory, have dots and dashes throughout the piece and have a lackluster surface.
I personally do not know how to determine the difference between; Elephant, Hippo, Whale, Seal bone. I do know for a fact it is diffidently bone, by the fact it has the glossy surface and dentine lines on each piece I have on auction. I am also 100% sure about the 14kt Gold Nuggets each piece is set with, as well as each piece of Petrified Wood.
