It has a handle on the side that you turn and each sentiment is individual--about one inch long--u need an ink pad

Yes Debbie, it has a little handle (crank) that turns it kind of like the old pricer things and then each saying is individual and about 1 inch long --I have never opened it, you would need a ink pad for it. I had planned to use for scrapbooking but I have so much stuff--I have to start thinning it out.
