This auction is for this Stunning 1943 Steel Penny a.k.a steelie. As you can see from the pictures it is in Good condition. It has a little bit of tarnish from age but is still a beautiful coin! This coin has the Denver (D) mint mark.
The story behind the penny: Due to wartime needs of copper for use in ammunition and other military equipment during World War II the United States Mint researched various ways to limit dependence and meet conservation goals on copper usage. After trying out several substitutes to replace the then-standard bronze alloy, the one-cent coin was minted in zinc-coated steel.
