I've been wondering about the whole arduino system series. What exactly or generally are these used for? Advanced switching?

You should check out www.makershed.com the possibilities are endless, you can add wifi capability, touch screens, lcd screens, or go into robotics. They are completely programmable. Some robot users make them manage electric motors. While some hackers use them to hack wireless signals, possibilities are endless!!!

Something else they are used for is running a 3D printer (though not this model - usually a Mega2560 or Sanguino derivative called a Sanguinololu - which is a Sanguino plus Pololu stepper motor driver sockets on board) ...
