I bought some old detective novels from a musty old bookstore a while back, but when I decided to read this one, I couldn't get past the first chapter; having developed an intense dislike for the detective. The book opens with some guys roughing him up and then dumping him in a room with some crime boss; the boss' sister is there, and they start sort of flirting, but she says something he doesn't like so he turns her over his knee, and spanks her. And her brother just chuckles. This all happens on PAGE TWELVE. I know it's depicted on the cover, and also a picture of the detective looking like he is trying to pass a kidney stone, that should have given me a clue.

This book was previously released under the title "Pattern for Murder".
