NOTES: The 1943 silver colored cent is a wartime issue made of steel, and coated with zinc. During World War II, copper was so badly needed for the war effort (to make shell casings) that the U.S. cent was made out of steel that year, which is why most 1943 cents are silver colored.
The 1944 - 1946 Lincoln cents are the "shell case" coins that were made with copper that was recovered from used shell cases on battleships and battlefields around the world. The shell cases were shipped back to the U.S. where they were melted and made into cents.
