how are the adapters used?

I did not open the adapeters, but I believe they hold the bag into the bottle so that you pump into the bag. I just pumped right into the bottle and then transferred to a bigger bottle as I pumped m ore.....does that make sense? That is why I have so many bags I never used them. I never got a good supply to have anything more than what I was going to use that day...never had any frozen supply to which I would need to use the bags.
