The listing, 3 VINTAGE Embossed ANTIQUE Metal BUTTONS Train Engine & Thistle has ended.
Up for bid are three antique metal buttons. Buttons are small (check size on scanned ruler), and are in good condition.
Two have a thistle design, and the one with the train engine is a S.O. & Company, N.Y. (Sweet Orr & Company). Sweet Orr & Company was a mercantile firm that operated around the turn of the century 1800s – early 1900s.
"Sweet-Orr, a New York-based producer of the canvas pants (overalls), was founded in 1871 and exhibited its product at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. The design boasted extra room in the seat, and Sweet-Orr claimed they were the most comfortable work pants. But the company's most important contribution was to standardize basic sizes for jeans, since ready-to-wear clothing became the norm as a result of the Civil War demand for off-the-rack speed and convenience. Up to that point, most other garments had been produced on a custom basis."
Not sure of the age of the thistle ones, but they are old. If you are a button collector, you may be interested in these three!
