Cacique (Chief) Calarcá led the Pijao people
of the Andes mountains. They were
warriors famous for their cruelty and under
Chief Calarca, fiercely resisted Spanish
conquest. In 1602 the Pijaos, led by Calarcá,
started a general war against the
Europeans until the Pijaos were defeated in
1608.
Honduras 1991 50 centavos de Lempira
During the 1530s chief Lempira was a ruler
of the indigenous Lenca people. His name
means "Lord of the Mountains." He is
renowned in Honduran folklore for
unifying more than 200 rival tribes to form
a resistance army of 30,000 against the
Spanish conquistador Francisco de
Montejo. Chief Lempira died in 1537 and
the resistance movement ended.
Mexico 1981 50 centavos
Cuauhtémoc (1495 – 28 February 1525) was
the Aztec ruler of Tenochtitlan from 1520 to
1521. He was captured by the Spanish
Conquistador Hernán Cortés. He was
tortured by the Spanish but never revealed
the location of the mythical gold they
desired.
