Well, back when me and my friends had Lego cities, we used gems as a form of currency. There was a point when I had over 400 gems, but I "spent" quite a bit of them, and so I'm left with just under 300.

Hello I don't know much about gems. Do they connect to legos or just lay around loose? Thanks

The bottom part of the gem is the same width of most Lego tools, so they can be connected to Lego guys' hands, and other Lego objects.
