New, but not in a box. I bought it for company laptop to use at home and work, a week later the business closed its doors. I've been going through boxes and found this. Its about a year old but only really used for a week. I don't need it anymore because I don't have a company laptop anymore. I bought it at Walmart for about $30. It is reversible - Black on one side and Gray on the other. My loss is your gain.

Yes, the crystals (or whatever are inside the pad) disperse the heat so it doesn't heat up your desk, lap, table or whatever its sitting on. My lap would get hot when I was working in the car, but with the cooling pad, I didn't feel any heat on my lap. Hope that helps you decide.

It disperses the heat away from the bottom of the laptop and protects your lap from feeling that heat.
